Product Owner at the same room with the Development Team

Here is the original question from a post on Linkedin – Product Owner at the same room with the Development Team

“From one perspective these two are a little bit on opposite sides.

For me it shouldn’t be any competition between these roles because transparency and common goal should be the mentality of a good established Scrum Team.

But…. In reality this happens very frequently. In the other hand a Dev Team needs the PO many times probably in every Sprint to clarify sometimes dark areas of user stories which have not been well discussed during the Planning Meeting. So having him in the same room its an asset.

Do you think the presence of the PO in the same room will affect the Dev Team results? And how?”

My Take – Yes, I think that it does impact the Development Team results and in a good way. I make this statement within the context of being in a company that’s main job is to develop a software application and grow a market. So, it is important to have that cohesiveness that comes with close contact.

This doesn’t mean that you can short-cut the Agile process by paying less attention to the user story development or the organizing of the sprints. You still need to follow the steps that make for good Agile team process. What it does allow you to do is get faster answers to questions that come up during the sprint and to develop a closer relationship between the Product Owner and the Development Team.
